On Teaching the Young Student
The Internet provides an expansive environment that
enhances many existing teaching and learning approaches while
facilitating new activities, free of traditional constraints. An
increased amount of activity is taking place online with the growth of
instantaneous interaction without regard for geographic, political,
racial, social, and gendered borders. In school settings, the need
to monitor cyberspace behaviour and minimize potential and actual risks
to children necessitates mediating potentially harmful interaction. It
is increasingly important to examine strategies to empower children and
youth with awareness in navigating their world. As young people
experience global exposure through avenues like the Internet, they need
assistance enhancing their proficiency with communication technologies
and, at the same time, develop personal and professional safety
mechanisms. This would include reflection on responsible choices,
avoidance techniques, netiquette and ethics training, cyber literacy,
and protection strategies. Activities which can engage them in
assessing risk, developing appropriate coping techniques, and practicing
responses to problematic situations are required. |
