Website Design and Maintenance

I began designing and teaching the creation and
maintenance of technical documents using mainframe document layout
applications in 1984. By the mid 90s, I gained vast experience
creating, organizing and teaching layout codes and templates for a
university environment. When the Internet became
commercially available in Canada in 1995, I began working on website
design. Since then, web management and design suites surfaced as
domain content management tools. I now enjoy the features that these
suites bring to
easing the coding aspects of website management and design.
I can concentrate on the layout and visual aspects of a website; I am at
ease changing structure and design. My fees are reasonable because
my experience enables me to more work quickly than most and I charge an
hourly rate working in a province that has no provincial sales tax.
US customers are happy — they don't have to pay GST. It is not uncommon for me to throw up a draft website in preparation for a
project quote. While I primarily work with Canadian clients, some are in
the United Kingdom and the United States.
Web design is a blend of art and craft. I am a deadline-driven
professional. I am savvy in technique and used
to hand-coding layout and design, code editing, and web-application building.
Web development has moved from a relatively static display of text and simple
images to a full-blown multimedia circus with streaming video, background music,
and interactive animations. Some of my websites intentionally push the
limits of bandwidth as I constantly explore and test a balance for quality and
speed in multimedia presentation on the Internet. Other sites
intentionally aim for quick download time and quick text information delivery.
I have produced numerous pages and have been involved as a primary consultant
in the initial development of large websites that contain hundreds of pages of
information, often playing the role of trainer of web authors.
My work as a technical writer and as a project manager combined with my work as
a photographer and graphic artist provides for creative development with
attention to the smallest details. For example, the website
UrbanRattlesnakes provides links to library sources of rattlesnake reports. As an Internet
consultant and educator, I am aware that many intermediate or advanced users are not aware of
being able to access such materials through their home or aware of how they can
do so.
